That night after dinner, they were back on the tour bus headed for Southern California. They didn’t have a show the next day, but they were being rushed along. Jake suspected that it was largely because the label didn’t want to spring for the suite for another night.

Sandra had flown all the way to San Francisco just to make sure they were okay and ask about whether they really wanted to look for a new label. She had promised to call them with news, and taken a cab back to the airport, headed home to Chicago. She wasn’t even staying the night in San Francisco.

Elsi, Alex, and Jake had jealously watched her go before piling back onto the bus, all wishing they were heading home too.

Jake noted that Brian seemed a little embarrassed, avoiding looking at the open longing on their faces. That was when he remembered something Elsi had mentioned along the way—Brian lived in Los Angeles. In a few days, they would be headed for his home.

“So,” he said nonchalantly. “You gonna put us up at Chez-Mulholland when we get to LA, man?”

Brian gave him a small smile. “If you want. I, um, I hope.”

That got Alex’s attention. “You hope? You worried there won’t be enough room for us?”

“No, it’s not that. There’s plenty of room. It’s just that when I left, there were reporters camped on my lawn. And, um”—he paused and swallowed hard—“my mother was there. She still has a key.”

“Dude,” Alex whispered, “are you worried that your mom trashed your house? Or like, stole your stuff?”

Brian stared at his feet, biting his lip and looking a bit like he wanted to cry. “Before last night, I wasn’t. Now, I don’t know.”

Jake did his best to look reassuring, though it wasn’t a vibe he tried to exude often, so he wasn’t sure if he succeeded. “No way to know till we get there. And if anything is wrong when we arrive, we’ll get it fixed.”

“And change the locks,” Elsi added.

“Oh no,” Jake said, patting Brian on the shoulder. “We can do so much better than just changing the locks. They do biometric ones now.”

“What, like only your fingerprints can get you into your house?” Brian asked, looking fascinated. “That’s kind of awesome. I wouldn’t have to worry about losing my key anymore.”

Jake grinned. “It’s good to have a dad who knows stuff about building houses. I’ll call him. He’ll tell us how to get it done.”

Brian looked so relieved by the conversation that it made Jake doubly grateful for the fact that his father ran a construction company. It wasn’t something he’d ever used to impress a crush before, but . . .

Was that what he was doing? Trying to put on some primitive mating show, fluffing his brightest feathers to get Brian’s attention and prove he was the most eligible male available?

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, then let it out slowly. He was such an idiot. He suddenly wished he’d had more than one beer with dinner.
